Joyya receives an admirable A+ grading in the 2021 Tearfund Ethical Fashion Report

Christchurch, New Zealand on 19th October 2021: Tearfund released its annual 2021 Ethical Fashion Report on October 9th, 2021, with Joyya receiving an admirable A+ grading. The research assessed 98 companies representing 400 brands over ten months. Grades A+ through F were awarded based on company responses and publicly available information. The five criteria on which the companies were evaluated are policies and governance, transparency and traceability, responsible purchasing practices, worker empowerment, and environmental sustainability across the different stages of the company’s supply chain: raw materials, input production, and final stage production.

Out of 98 companies, only 4 companies surveyed received an A+ score, with 54 sitting at a B or C score and 24 receiving a D or F. Key highlights on Joyya:

  • Joyya, is in the top four performing companies globally in the 2021 Ethical Fashion Report.
  • Joyya is the only New Zealand company to get an A+.
  • Joyya is the only company in New Zealand that ensures a living wage is paid in at least half of its supply chain.

Age Palmer, General Manager of Joyya, New Zealand, says, “We are super excited to receive an A+ rating. Every tee, bag, and accessory that Joyya makes goes through a rigorous quality check. At every point in our supply chain, we ensure environmentally sustainable and socially responsible practices". Adding to this, Chirag Jain, COO of Joyya, says,"Our employees have been at the heart of our existence. More than a living wage, we are working towards empowering our worker and communities. We are elated to be recognized globally and look forward to model how a business can thrive prioritizing people and planet over profit.”

The apparel industry is a multi-million-dollar industry with 80 million garments purchased annually across the world. And over 50 million people working in the global garment industry. With such glory comes challenges too! Most of the garment workers are denied worker rights such that fashion is the among top 5 most exposed industries to modern-day slavery risk, with about 98% of garment workers unable to meet their basic needs. Besides, poor human resource practices garment industry also currently contributes 10 percent of global emissions. Tearfund holds companies accountable and demands transparency. This promotes fairer working conditions and environmentally conscious production.

The report made several recommendations for businesses, including continuing to improve ethical sourcing, increasing transparency of supply chains, and ensuring workers receive living wages. We can hope brands and consumers will accept transparency as the new standard of the apparel industry.
