Joyya’s Heart: Soma’s Commitment to Growth and Connection
Joyya creates spaces where people feel valued, supported, and empowered to grow. Meet one of our Centre Managers who is helping to do just that.
Soma has been a dedicated presence in one of our Joyya communities for many years, so we were overjoyed when she stepped into the role of Joyya Centre Manager. With a perfect blend of organization and compassion, she ensures that everyone who walks through the doors of our Community Centre feels truly welcome.
Beyond her daily work, Soma has a gift for bringing people together. For the past two years, she has directed and choreographed a vibrant Christmas pageant, opening it up to all Joyya communities. Featuring dance, drama, decorations, and plenty of festive treats, the event has become a much-loved tradition—one that reflects Soma’s hard work and passion for building community.
At The Cup, our drop-in centre for women from the community, Soma fosters a space where people can share a cup of tea, find support, and feel valued. She and her team are deeply committed to improving lives, and their impact is clear—enrollment in Joyya’s vocational courses, including language, beauty, makeup, baking, guitar, and even cycling lessons, continues to grow. Soma says her favourite part of the job is seeing others grow.
“I am happy to serve the community as I get to see all of the children and women in our community be able to have opportunities to learn – opportunities that weren’t available for me when I was a growing up here. I think if everyone comes and learns for two hours a week, it is a special time for them, both for their minds in learning new things but also for their futures. They come to me and say, “I learnt this, I received this certificate or gift” and they are so proud. It makes me really happy to see that”
